Screen printing is such a versatile and rewarding process, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting your artistic journey. From bold, graphic designs to delicate, layered textures, the possibilities are endless, but a few simple tips can make a huge difference in the quality of your prints.
One of the first things is that consistency is key. Small details, like the way you pull your squeegee or how clean your screens are, can dramatically affect the final result. To help you get the most out of your screen-printing sessions, we’ve put together some practical tips and tricks that are perfect for beginners and pros alike:
1. Use a squeegee consistently:
The squeegee is the heart of your print. For even ink coverage, try to maintain the same angle and pressure with each pull. Pull too hard, and the ink may smear or stretch; pull too lightly, and the print may come out patchy. By practicing a smooth, steady motion, your prints will look clean and professional every time. A good trick is to rehearse the motion without ink first; it helps build muscle memory and confidence. 40-45 degree angle is a great starting point for most jobs, but the ideal angle varies, use a higher, steeper angle (60-80°) for less ink and fine details (sharper cut) or a lower, shallower angle (closer to 45° or even less) for more ink and heavier deposits (softer cut)
2. Mask the edges of your screen for clean prints:
Before you start printing, tape around the inside edges of the screen to block off any open mesh that isn’t part of your design. This stops ink creeping out beyond the image area and keeps the edges of your print sharp and controlled.
This step is especially important when working with layered prints, fine detail, or student-led projects, where excess ink can quickly turn a good print into a messy one. Apply the tape firmly and evenly, pressing it down to seal the mesh properly, a few extra minutes of preparation here will save time, paper and frustration later.
3. Experiment with layering colours:
Don’t be afraid to layer different colours to add depth and texture. Sometimes the most interesting results come from “happy accidents,” like unexpected overlaps or colour blending. Start with lighter inks first, and gradually build up darker layers. Not

only does this give your designs more dimension, but it also helps you learn how inks interact and improve your overall technique.
4. Keep your screens clean:
Even a tiny amount of dried ink can ruin a print. Make it a habit to clean your screens immediately after use, using warm water and a gentle scrub. This prevents clogs, keeps your mesh in top condition, and ensures consistent results in future prints. A clean screen is not just about aesthetics; it’s about maintaining the quality of your work and saving yourself headaches down the line.
5. Test your designs before committing:
Avoid wasting materials by testing your prints on old T-shirts, paper scraps, or fabric samples. This allows you to adjust ink thickness, squeegee technique, and colour placement before working on your final piece. Testing also gives you a chance to experiment without fear, which is often when the most creative ideas emerge. Think of it as a rehearsal that helps you perfect your craft.
If all this sounds exciting but a little overwhelming, our Screen Printing Beginners Pack has everything you need to get started. From screens, squeegees to inks, so you can skip the guesswork and dive straight into creating.
Screen printing is not just about technique, it’s about exploration and having fun with your designs. Every print is an opportunity to experiment, learn, and grow as an artist.
